HBM Welcomes New Additions to the Human Resources Team

We know it takes hard work to maintain a culture that empowers individuals at every level of the organization to achieve great things. As we continue to make HBM a place to build a rewarding career, we’re proud and excited to announce two new additions to our Human Resources team.

Jade DeBusk joins HBM as Senior Manager, Talent Development. She’s responsible for managing and coordinating enterprise-wide efforts around performance management, training, employee development, talent acquisition, and on-boarding.

Todd Roach joins HBM portfolio business Schafer Industries as Director, Human Resources. A key member of the Schafer leadership team, Todd leads strategic and day-to-day efforts related to employee relations, recruitment, and all HR aspects of the business as it continues to grow.

We sat down with Jade and Todd to learn more about their backgrounds and how they are shaping their new roles.

Jade and Todd, tell us more about your backgrounds and what drew you to the roles at HBM and Schafer Industries.

JD: I’ve had an opportunity to work across a diverse background of industries and have always loved the challenge of learning how to make HR programs and talent development part of the business strategy.  I love the people/talent focus at HBM, as well as the variety of working with the different portfolio companies to help build on the momentum they’ve established.

TR: Prior to joining Schafer, I worked at American Railcar Industries as the Divisional HR Manager, responsible for 800 employees in 15 locations across the U.S. and Canada. What made me so interested in this role was the opportunity to join a talented management team with a focus on growing and improving the business. At Schafer, I am a true business partner to the operational leaders as we look to expand both organically and through strategic acquisitions.

Jade, where does your passion for talent development come from, and how do you envision this critical need evolving within the HBM organization as we continue to grow?

JD: I’ve been fortunate to work in people-focused cultures and have had opportunities to experience really great development programs as well as strong mentors. I’ve seen the power of what investing in talent can do for people and companies and want to be a part of the personal and professional growth of both. At HBM, I envision more personalized development for our leaders. In my role I hope to create opportunities for education, experience and exposure for those who want to grow and continue to build a great talent pipeline.

Todd, Schafer produces engineered, precision machined products that require complicated machinery and strong operator knowledge. How do you think about hiring for these roles in today’s competitive manufacturing talent environment? 

TR: With unemployment at record lows, it’s no surprise that hiring skilled labor is a challenge. Over the next several months we’ll be partnering with HBM to look at innovative ways to recruit new talent, as well as ensure we are retaining the great talent we already have within our business. The bottom line here is we can’t expect the same recruiting methods that worked in the past to work in today’s job market.

What will you be focusing on in 2019 as you settle into your roles? Any key priorities?

JD: Creating a sustainable, consistent and customizable frontline leadership development framework for all of HBM is the primary focus in 2019.

TR: I hope to help our team implement new processes and innovations to the HR function that will improve efficiency and transactional accuracy. Some of the key priorities include standardizing core process across our four locations and bringing new HR tools and resources to our operational leaders and their HR business partners. Tools like new talent management systems and HR compliance technology will allow our leaders to focus their energy on running the business.

How do you spend your time when you’re not thinking about HR and employee development?

JD: In my free time I’m usually hanging out with my husband and our dogs and likely planning my next concert or beach adventure.

TR: With four daughters at home, I spend a lot of time with my family and at extracurricular activities. I’m also a huge Blues hockey fan and take every opportunity to watch the team play. I also enjoy giving back to my local community and church, and currently serve as an O’Fallon, IL City Alderman.
